William L. Bean

William “Bill” Louis Bean went to meet the Lord on Thursday September 25, 2025. Bill, lovingly known as “Poppy” to his family, was born April 25th, 1943 in Salamanca, NY. He was the son of the late James L. and Helen M. Bean. As a child he enjoyed hanging out with his many amazing cousins and classmates, and working at his grandmother's logging camp in Salamanca. On February 26th, 1965 he married Marcia L. Burroughs from Portville, NY. They were blessed to share over 60 years of marriage together. Bill was a graduate of Olean High School and Olean Business Institute. He worked at Kabar Cutlery and Dresser Industries in Olean before joining the New York State Police, and moving with his wife and two daughters to Lansing, NY in 1968.

Bill is survived by his wife Marcia, two daughters, Kim Steiner of Lansing, NY and Kari Sciera of Wellesley, MA. Bill was preceded in death by his infant son Phillip William. In addition to his children, Bill was blessed with four grandchildren, Zachary Steiner ( Amanda), Kyle Steiner (Logan), Mace Sciera, and Ryan Sciera. Just last year “Poppy” was delighted to hold his great granddaughter Karrigan Steiner (Kyle and Logan) and great grandson Luca Steiner (Zach and Amanda.) Bill is also survived by many extended family members and friends who love him dearly.

Bill retired from the New York State Police/BCI and as a U.S. Customs Officer in 2001. Bill was stationed in Ithaca, NY. (Troop C) for many years and later in his career in the World Trade Center in NYC, NY. He was known for protecting others with courage, compassion and an unwavering sense of duty. His 34 years of public service was a great source of personal pride for both Bill and his family. His legacy is not only in the uniform he wore, but in the countless lives he touched with kindness, fairness and respect. Bill will be remembered for his devotion to his family, decades of public service, playful sense of humor, and deep faith in Jesus Christ. To his family and close friends he was a steady presence - someone who could always be counted on for wise counsel, a warm smile or a helping hand. His absence leaves a profound void, but his spirit will live on in all those fortunate enough to have known him. Bill made friends everywhere he went, but he enjoyed time with his family above all else. Bill’s family is so grateful to the hundreds of people who reached out upon news of his passing to offer condolences and share special memories. We can all only hope to be remembered so lovingly by so many. He was an extraordinary man...

At Bill’s request, there will be no services. Please stop by our celebration of Bill’s life at the All Saints Parish Center at 347 Ridge Rd., Lansing, NY on Saturday October 25th from 1-3pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Signal 30 NYS Troopers Benefit Fund (Signal30.org) to support NYS Police and their families in times of hardship.
