Rev. Magellan Jones Jr, was born March 6, 1940, to the late Magellan Sr. and Annie Jane Jones in Montrose, Georgia. Most of his childhood years were passed under the supervision of his maternal grandparents the late Willie and Carrie Thomas. Immediately following the death of his grandfather, Magellan discontinued his formal education and entered the workforce to facilitate the welfare of his family. Despite his meager education, he made tremendous strides as an entrepreneur. His portfolio included a tenure as a healthcare assistant, sanitary technician, and culinarian. One of his most burgeoning ventures was the proprietorship of Jones’ Cleaning Service, noted for delivering an unsurpassed cleaning experience.

However, his most notable engagement was preaching the gospel and singing. Rev. Jones preached the gospel with a mesmerizing merger of passion and power. His delivery was never monotonous or half-hearted; never irrational or irrelevant. With palpable conviction, he would preach until his clothes were drenched with sweat. He served as Senior Pastor of the Baptized Church of Jesus Christ, of Ithaca, New York for a number of years. During his tenure the church successfully erected its current facility.

He will long be remembered for his singing voice that was as dynamic as it was distinguished. From the raised rostra of solemn sanctuaries, to the somber corridors of local nursing facilities, his voice brought comfort to many. To him, singing was never a chore, it was a natural reflex. It came without prompting or premeditation. Even as the last modicum of physical inertia began to exit his body, he mustered the strength to lift a stanza of one final hymn… “twas grace that brought me safe this far, and grace will lead me home.”

Just before 8 o’clock on the morning of September 2nd, Rev. Jones took residence in the eternal city where the Lamb is the Light.

He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, one sister: Mattie Baughn, 3 Children: Beta Fay Jones, Michael Amos Jones, and Frances Maria Jones; he is survived by his wife: Maxine Cole-Jones, 11 Children: Albert Jones, Deanna Jones, Magellan Jones III, J. Gregory Jones (LaKica), Angelette Mercier (Herman), Michelle Jones, Patricia McCrory (Tim), Cristie Floyd, Sondra Kaye Predmore, Alicia McFarland, Christian Campbell-King, 2 sisters: Mazie Gortmann, “Annie” Lucille Carter (James) 4 stepchildren: Joseph M. Cole (Jessica), Margo L. Budha (Eon), Sharon Whisby-Bentley, Raymond Whisby, and a host of relatives and friends.
