Marie J. Newton

MARIE J. NEWTON, age 89, formerly of Collins Road, Freeville, NY passed away Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2014 at the Groton Nursing Facility after a lengthy illness. Marie was born March 14, 1925 in Franklin Square, NY a daughter of the late John Lewis Hoagland and Marie Budd Hoagland. She was graduated from Sewenaka High School in Floral Park, Long Island, NY. After meeting Robert Ellis Newton, who was serving in the Navy SeaBees, the couple was married in Ithaca, NY on Dec. 22, 1945. “Bob” and Marie were dairy farmers for many years. Bob passed away February 5, 1986. Marie was employed as a home care aide and later at TST BOCES as a teacher’s aide and in the cafeteria. She was a member of the West Groton Bible Church and was active in many church related activities and organizations. Marie taught Sunday School for all of her adult life and for many years taught the “Good News Club” to children in her home. She was a former member of the Grange. Most of all, she was a full time wife, mother and grandmother and a faithful servant of the Lord.

Survivors include her children, Carlyle (Laura) Newton of Freeville, Jo-Ann (John) MacLean of Groton and Mary-Ellen (Granger) Cook of Salem, WI, Betty-Jane Glenn of Groton; daughters-in-law, Sandy Newton of Freeville and Sharon Newton of Groton; eighteen grandchildren and 41 great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her husband, Robert, her sons, John, Robert S. and Willard H. Newton and a great-grandson, Isaiah Peder Heieren.

Funeral services will be held at 11 AM, Saturday, Nov.15, 2014 at the Perkins Funeral Home with Pastor Sam Neno officiating. Burial will follow in Cobb Street Cemetery, Groton. Friends are invited to call Friday, from 4-6 PM at the funeral home, 55 West Main Street, Dryden.
