Kenneth M. Johnson, 94, of Marathon, N. Y., passed away December 25, 2012 at Crown Center Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Cortland, NY, after several years of declining health.

Ken was born July 9, 1918 to Reno Q. and Hazel Henry Johnson. He grew up on Merrill Creek Road and spent most of his life in the Marathon area, except during WWII when he lived in Ilion, NY and worked at the Remington Arms gun factory.He was a self-employed carpenter. In his younger days he built some houses. When it became too difficult to climb a ladder, he switched to building cupboards and ’fixing stuff’ in his ’shop’ at the corner of Brink and Peck Street in Marathon, where his mother had previously lived. There his many friends would stop by for a chat and maybe a warm-up by the wood stove.

Ken was also a proud member of the local Civil Defense team for several years during the 1950‘s and 60‘s.

Surviving are his daughter Sandra S. Johnson of Cortland, NY, his sons Kevin (Judy) Johnson of Front Royal, VA, Deron (Kim) Johnson of Marathon, and stepson Roland Robinson of Marathon, plus sister Marie Wilcox of Marathon. Also surviving are grandchildren Matthew Johnson of Enid, OK, Christian Johnson of Washington, DC, Garrett Johnson of Los Angeles, CA, Rosalie Johnson of Marathon, step-grandchildren Jeffrey Robinson of Michigan, Jennifer Robinson of Florida, Deborah Mason of Washingtonville, NY, Daniel Mason of Alexandria, VA, and great-grandchildren Morgan, Cooper, Kate, and Reese Johnson, all of Enid, OK, plus several nieces and nephews.He was pre-deceased by his three wives, Wenona Hines Johnson in 1949, Eula Wolfinbarger Mules Johnson in 1956, and Ruby Parker Robinson Johnson in 1999, plus son Mark G. Johnson, stepdaughter Rosalie Robinson Mason, brother Karl Johnson, sister Alma Conklin, as well as many friends.

Calling hours will be held Saturday, December 29 at 1:00 PM, immediately followed by a funeral service at 2:00 PM, both at AC Baker & Son Funeral Home, 30 E. Main Street in Marathon. Internment will be in the Spring in Forrest Hill Cemetery in Blodgett Mills, NY. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Marathon Fire Department or charity of your choice.
