Joseph N. Mcardle

Joseph Neil McArdle, 87, of Freeville, passed peacefully from this life on Saturday, Aug 13, 2016 at the Beechtree Center for Rehab and Nursing in Ithaca, NY.

He was born Dec 8, 1928 in Stockholm, the 4th of 7 children, to Francis and Mary Evelyn (Trombly) McArdle. He grew up in the Madrid Springs area and graduated from Madrid Central School in 1947. He moved to Buffalo in 1948, securing a position at the Bethlehem Steel Company in Lackawanna, where he worked for 30 years in electrical maintenance. Retired at the age of 49, Joe started his own electrical contracting business. He wired his last house at the age of 77. He served with the U.S. Army in Germany during the Korean war.

He married his wife of 44 years, the late Nancy Petersen, in Buffalo on St. Patrick's Day 1951. They moved to the country to raise their 7 children. Joe enjoyed gardening, farming, hunting and fishing. He loved to sit at the kitchen table with a cup of tea and a good book. He always found value in others. He had a smile and a kind word for everyone he met. He was a caring father who took the time to listen to and appreciate his children and grandchildren. He will be dearly missed.

He leaves to cherish his memory: one brother, Patrick McArdle, of California. Two sons, Joseph (Ann) McArdle and William (Donna) McArdle, both of Pennsylvania. Five daughters, Elizabeth (Frank) Trabucco of Texas, Eileen Harrington of Cortland, Joanne McArdle of Oregon, Peggy (James) Owsian of New Hampshire and Mary (Richard) Snyder of Freetown. 23 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, nephews and nieces.
