Jean Sylvia Smiley, a cherished member of her community and family, passed away on March 26, 2026. Born on August 6, 1947, in Ithaca, NY, Jean lived a life marked by dedication, passion, and a deep love for the outdoors.
Jean graduated from Dryden High School in 1965, a milestone that laid the foundation for her many accomplishments. She was employed with NYSEG, where she worked with commitment and integrity until her retirement in 2002. Throughout her career, Jean was known for her dependable nature and her genuine care for those around her.
An avid outdoorswoman, Jean loved to hunt deer and turkey, embracing the serenity and challenge of nature. She also enjoyed trap and skeet shooting, activities that reflected both her skill and her adventurous spirit. Beyond her hobbies, Jean always looked forward to family gatherings, where her warmth and laughter enriched every moment shared.
Jean was preceded in death by her parents, Roland and Thursa VanArkel Smiley. She is survived by her beloved twin brother, James (Deb) Smiley, Sr. of Freeville, NY; her sisters Marjorie (Bill) Mau of Cortland, NY, Sonja Howe of Mifflinville, PA. She also leaves behind many cousins, nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews who will carry forward the legacy of her love and kindness.
Jean’s life was one of heartfelt devotion to family, a passionate connection to nature, and a career that many admired. She will be remembered with great respect and deep affection by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Varna Fire and Rescue, 14 Turkey Hill Road, Ithaca, NY 14850.
Private services and burial will be held at a later date at Willow Glen Cemetery.
