JEAN B. VAN ALSTINE, age 86, a long time resident of the Village of Dryden, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 14, 2008 at the Cayuga Medical Center at Ithaca. Jean was born July 23, 1921 in New Albany, PA a daughter of the late Ennis and Bess Wilcox Burch. After graduating from Penn State University in State College, PA she was married to Daniel P. Van Alstine on December 27, 1943. Mr. Van Alstine passed away April 21, 2002. Mrs. Van Alstine was a former Dryden High School Home Economics Teacher and an administrator at the Family and Children’s Service of Ithaca. Jean was above all an active member of the Dryden community. She served as a Village Trustee, was a charter member of the Dryden Footlighter’s, The Dryden Fortnightly Club, a cub scout Den Mother and a 60 year member of The First Presbyterian Church of Dryden. Also, Jean was one of the founding members and the initial Secretary of the Dryden Senior Housing Corporation. She enjoyed traveling, gardening, skiing, painting and being actively involved in life.

She is survived by her three sons, Peter (Mary Beth) of Camden, ME, Jeff (Nadine) of Longmont, CO and Eric (Linda) of Haiku, HI; five grandchildren, Peter, Jamie, Leaf, Chase and Brett; three great-grandchildren, Hannah, Hayden and Lotus.

Memorial services will be held at 11 AM, Thursday June 19, 2008 at The First Presbyterian Church of Dryden with Rev. David C. Robinson officiating. Burial will be private in Green Hills Cemetery, Dryden. Jean’s family will greet their friends at a luncheon to be held in the Fellowship Hall of the church immediately after the service.
