Fred Brandon, lovingly known to everyone as Tony, passed away peacefully with family members by his side at the age of 88.
Tony was born in Newport News, Virginia, to Alvin and Anna Lee Brandon. He spent his early years in North Carolina with his grandparents before moving to Baltimore, where he lived with his Aunt Mary and Uncle Schmitty. From an early age, Tony had a big personality and an even bigger heart — qualities that would define his life everywhere he went.
He began his career as a Union Steward for Montgomery Ward in Chicago before making his way to what he proudly called “the greatest city in the world,” New York City. Tony made New York his home for more than 50 years. There, he worked in the lower west side meat market after some years of delivering meat to the boroughs he built a thriving business, Class Act, a luxury limousine service that became a staple of Manhattan through the 1980s and 1990s and also founded A Touch of Excellence Limousine service. He also loved the boxing ring where he was undefeated. Tony had a gift for connecting with people — from everyday New Yorkers to the rich and famous. He loved telling stories about the people he met, many of whom never forgot him.
In 1989, Tony and his longtime partner Amy Cobb welcomed their beloved daughter, Ashley, who was daddy’s girl from day one and in 1994 their son, Hunter, emulated his father’s love and spirit for the bright lights of NYC. Family was always the center of Tony’s world. After decades in the city, Tony relocated to Cortland, New York, in 2001, where he quickly became known — and loved — by nearly everyone he met. His kindness, humor, and ability to make friends wherever he went became his trademark.
Tony loved spending time with his in- laws, Ken and Sandy Cobbs, family farm in McDonough, playing cards and helping in the barn with the horses and sheep. Tony also loved tinkering with stereo equipment at all hours of the night, and rearranging furniture — just to make things “feel fresh again.” He had a soft spot for animals, especially the family’s two beloved Peekapoos, Dill and Pickles and his kitty LoLa.
In recent years, Tony’s greatest joy came from being “Papa” to his grandson, Cash Rayl, who brought endless love, light and laughter into his life. Whether they were dancing, watching football, or just sharing snacks. Tony also adored his extended family, grandson Maddox POLEY, who held a special place in his heart, and his God son Bruce Lewis, who he held close to his side for 50 years.
Tony will be remembered for his generosity, quick wit, and endless stories. He loved deeply, lived fully, and made every person he met feel like a lifelong friend.
He is survived by his partner Amy Cobb, daughter, Ashley; his son, Hunter; Bruce; his grandson, Cash and Maddox; and countless friends and loved ones.
A celebration of Tony’s life will be held at Cortland Beer Company 16 West Court St. Cortland this Saturday November 1st from 2 to 6pm.
