Carl L. Sherman

Carl L. Sherman, age 77, of 2727 South Cortland-Virgil Rd., Cortland, NY passed away, Thursday, October 25, 2012 at Strong Memorial Hospital, Rochester, NY following a lengthy illness.

Born May 9, 1935 in Cortland, NY he was a son of the late Byron P. and Bessie Gingrich Sherman. Carl was a 1953 graduate of Virgil High School. He was a dairy farmer for 30 years, followed by employment with Alliance Bank, retiring in 2000. Carl served as a draftsman with the US Air Force, from 1954 – 1957. On December 22, 1955 he married the former Joyce Ballard at Dryden, NY. Carl was a member of the Virgil Alumni, Virgil Rural Cemetery Board, Board member of Cortland Co. Soil and Water Conservation, member of the Board of Agway Petroleum, Past Master of South Cortland Grange #487 and a member of the State and National Grange.

Mr. Sherman is survived by his wife, Joyce B. Sherman at home; his children, Laura (Robert) Bernhardt of Palmetto, FL; Luanne (Gary) Swanson of Slate Hill, NY; Lois Fletcher of Cortland, NY; Gary Sherman of Virgil, NY; eleven grandchildren; one great grandchild on the way; his sister, Betty Fedorka of Lansing, NY; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Dorothy Rew and brother, Donald Sherman.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am, Wednesday, October 31, 2012 at Perkins Funeral Home, with Rev. David Nicholls officiating. Burial will follow in Virgil Rural Cemetery. Friends may call from 5-8 pm, Tuesday at the funeral home, 55 W. Main St., Dryden, NY.
